This morning I woke up late. I was snuggled cozily in my warm sheets while cool air breezed over me from the AC vent. Pale light slipped through my blinds and past my curtains, gently pressing against my eyes and telling me it was morning. I sighed blissfully, savoring the quiet beauty. And then I got up and began the day.
That peaceful moment with the early sunshine has stuck with me all day. I want it back. The beautiful peace in that cool, gentle light, before the world had become bright and busy and overwhelming, weighted with all of the demands of the day. Just me and the ivory morning light and the peace of Christ. It reminded me of something.
Jesus said, “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness” (John 12:46). And then he points us to reflect that light, shining it to others in Matthew 5. I once heard a quote somewhere along the lines of, “In an ocean of evil, the Church is a lighthouse.” It is THE JOB of believers to shine light to others, because evil is darkness. When we shine light, we stop the world from disappearing into blackness. We keep things running. You can’t live without light. Believers, shining the light of Christ, are the ones who keep the darkness from taking over the entire world. Sounds like something out of Lord of the Rings, doesn’t it? Except this is 100% real.
It’s almost like light promises us hope. Even when there is darkness all around us, light is somewhere. There is a lantern burning in the darkest of nights, stars shining against blackest skies. Just like there is always hope. And no matter how long the night may last, we’re always promised morning. Just like no matter how long the sin in this world persists, believers are promised perfection and healing in heaven.
There is so much symbolism and beauty to the topic of light that honestly I could write a book about it! But all of this light will converge, just like the homes will converge. Ultimately, when put all together, light reminds me of one thing.
Physical light, like the kind I enjoyed this morning, comes from the sun, right? Someday we won’t need a sun. “And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there” (Revelation 21:22-25).
Light points us toward heaven, when there will be no darkness at all.
