My sister got a hamster for her birthday.
I know. Help.
From the beginning, I was opposed to it. A hamster? Like the kind that runs on a wheel all night long and keeps everyone in the house awake? The kind that STINKS? The kind that can supposedly flatten its body, escape through the slats of the cage, eat your house’s electrical wiring and die in the wall, stinking up the place? (True horror story. It happened to my pastor. Moral: Purchase a glass cage.)
So after Ava convinced me that Dwarf Hamsters don’t stink, explained that he would be living downstairs, and chose an ahem, glass habitat, most of my fears were eased. You know, sort of. Because then there’s Bunnicula. (Yes I am aware that he was a bunny BUT PET VAMPIRES ARE PET VAMPIRES!)(If you look at the picture above for longer he stops looking sinister. I promise it’s just your imagination.)
Okay, seriously. π I wasn’t home when he entered the household. And I won’t say I wasn’t slightly relieved to delay the meeting? But when I met the li’l guy this evening when he came out for supper, I was pleasantly surprised. (His name is Bo, by the way. Short for Boba Tea. As in that is his full name. Isn’t my sister AWESOME?). He’s reaaally tiny, and very inquisitive. He moved his nose almost like my friends’ rabbits. I gotta be honest, when he started picking up his food between those two tiny paws, my dislike kind of melted. Like, I’m still not going to touch him (just in case he and Bunnicula are distantly related), but I feel safe to sleep under the same roof.
Here’s the thing. Bo is perfect for my sister. I’ve never seen her like this. In an awesome, crazy way. She’s cooing to him and honestly I’ve never heard her talk like that! She already loves him. And I can’t wait to see how their girlie/pet relationship grows.
There’s something about thankfulness in the title of this post, isn’t there? Right. I’m thankful for Bunnicula! (Just kidding. But sis, you may not read beyond this point lest I lose my reputation. ππ) I am thankful (dare I say it?) for Bo. Because I see something in Ava that glows when given the opportunity to nurture this creature that’s like 200 times smaller than her. She’s so happy. And if it makes my sis happy, it makes me happy.
But I promise, you will not catch me cooing at him. EVER. π€ͺ
P.S. Apparently hamsters like the book Duck for President. Really recommend that one! π
Was Bunnicula a vampire? I don’t remember. Refresh my memory in the comments!
Loved this post! Glad you’re beginning to enjoy him, even if ever so slightly. π There really is something about taking care of something smaller than you that can bring a new side of you into the light, isn’t there?
There is! It’s crazy. He is growing on me…
I love this! This is a really good post. Bo is very cute! Your younger sister loves him very much.
Love, Juliana (I am Ava’s good friend and hamster helperππ)
